Eero Arnio
The Bubble Chair was created by Eero Aarnio. It’s design dates back to 1968 and that makes it even more surprising and fascinating. According to Eero’s notes, original the Bubble chair was hung from the ceiling because ‘there’s no nice way to make a clear pedestal.’ He is well known for his plastic and fiberglass chairs. Eero Aarnio was born in Helsinki, Finland. He studied at the Institute of Industrial Arts, before he began his own interior/industrial design office in 1962. For his earlier designs, such as his basket chair Jattujakkare; Aarnio used natural materials. His most popular design, the Ball Chair (designed in 1962) which is a hollow sphere made of plastic, with an opening on one side that has a padded interior and a seat. In 1968, Eero Aarnio won the American Industrial Design Award for the Plastil Chair, which is a curved, organic design made of fiberglass, and floats on water. Many of his designs are humorous and interesting. A few are; the Pony Chair and The Tipi [which is a chair made in the shape of a bird]. He combined the Scandinavian tradition of simplicity with innovative use of materials, and created furniture designs that are sculptural yet functional. His designs went on to become iconic in popular culture during the 1960s, and his works are held in several museum collections, such as;
- The Victoria and Albert Museum in London,
- The Vitra Design Museum in Weil am Rhein, and
- The Museum of Modern Art in New York.
History and inspiration of the hanging bubble chair
As a young boy Eero Aarnio was fascinated with soap bubbles. In the city, he had never made one. But on escaping the war to the countryside, he remembered blowing huge soap bubbles from a barn. The bubbles would take off with the wind and drift far away into the fields. The image of a field filled with transparent soap bubbles stuck with him and never left. After the success of the Ball Chair, Eero carried on designing again with functionalism as his goal. The ball chair seemed to be a perfect hiding place from the outside world; but Eero later discovered that reading in the Ball chair was not ideal. There was not enough light inside this chair. So, he came up with all kinds of ideas on how to let in light inside the Ball Chair… including an experiment with a small window in it. After various efforts, he wondered if the shell could be made of transparent material. At first, he drew the shell to consist of two halves; joined together with a seam. He came to the conclusion that it would probably work, but the look would not be what the he desired. The family had half-round acrylic ceiling windows at their home, and he started to wonder, how are they actually made? Eero Aarnio grabbed the yellow pages and under the occupation listings found a company, which produced ceiling windows. He called them and simply asked how the windows are made, and if his idea could work. Alas, the idea was possible! Acrylic can be heated and blown into shape, just like a soap bubble. He was later faced with another problem. With a shell made of acrylic, how would one fasten the shell to the pedestal? The structures would be too complex to work with, and the aesthetics would be totally different. There was really no nice way to attach the shell to a leg. He then came up with the idea of fixing it to the ceiling. The final sketch was done in 1968. Now, one won’t run out of light reading in the Bubble Chair, it’s flooding with natural light from all directions. When it came to using a chain to suspend the bubble chair, the decision was easy for Eero. A metal chain was by far the strongest in his eyes. Presenting the Bubble to Asko Furniture Company, they were very excited from the beginning. At this time, the Ball Chair had already gained a lot of momentum around the world, and the Bubble received high praise by the public as well.

10 Cleaning Tips For Your Hanging Bubble Chair
If your household is like most others that have a bubble chair , it’s the most popular seat in the house! Because it’s being used a lot, it’s important to keep it maintained and clean. Caring for your bubble chair is super easy! Implement these 10 tips and you’ll have years and years of enjoyment from your chair.
• Once a week use a feather duster or a soft cloth to wipe off the clear fiberglass or acrylic bubble. When needed, use warm soapy water with a soft cloth to clean the bubble on the outside (and inside if necessary). Wipe with a wet soft cloth and polish dry with a paper towel. • At least once a week, remove the cushions from the chair and shake them out. This will keep crumbs, hair, dust, etc. from building up on the cushions.
• Vacuum the inside of the bubble and the cushions as needed with a handheld vacuum. If something sticky gets spilled, wash the interior of the bubble with warm soapy water. Remove the cushions.
• Treat cushion stains as soon as possible. Use a cleaning supply that you’ve tested in advance to treat the stain. Let the cushions air dry before placing them back in the bubble. If a stain isn’t easily removed, contact a professional cleaner.
• If you’re using your bubble chair outside, when possible, bring the cushions in during bad weather. If the cushions do get rained on, hang them on a line or over a shower curtain rod to air dry. Because raindrops sometimes cling to dust, be sure that there aren’t specks on your cushions. If you do find specks, simply treat the entire cushion.
• Have your leather cushions waterproofed. This will prolong the life of the cushions and will make for easier cleanup should something get spilled on the cushion.
• If you’re using a stand with your bubble chair , polish the stand once every two or three weeks. Also polish the chrome of the opening of the chair.
• Do you have a matching ottoman? Be sure to clean the upholstery regularly, otherwise, the fabric can be soiled by shoes or bare feet. • If your chair is outside, there is some risk of it getting hit with a twig, a bouncy ball, a bird, etc. If you notice any marks, clean them up right away. In most cases you can use warm soapy water. For a stubborn stain use a mixture of half water and half white vinegar. Spray the mixture directly on the mark and wipe with a soft cloth.
• At least once a year, have a professional cleaner thoroughly clean your bubble chair. They will be able to get dust mites and such that a cloth or handheld vacuum might not pick up.
With the proper maintenance and care, your bubble chair will serve you well over the years. Cleaning your chair involves just a few minutes and is relatively simple. So go ahead and clean, and then take a break and enjoy your chair!

However, the bubble is now available in a transparent blue which is breathtaking!
• Cushion color. The bubble chair cushions typically come in silver or white, but you can custom order come some amazing colors–blue, orange, green, red, just to name a few! Once you know where you want to hang your chair, the color choice is up to you!
• Fabric choice. What’s your preference? Do you like leather seats? Do you prefer cloth? Depending on where you purchase your bubble chair, you’ll have a variety of options. • Polyethylene or polypropylene. Polyethylene is used for most bubble chairs because it’s tougher and more resistant to heat, water and scratches. • Chrome or stainless steel. Attached to the acrylic ball is a metal ring to reinforce the sturdiness of the chair. You have a choice of chrome or stainless steel. • Suspend from ceiling or from the floor. Planning on using your chair out by the pool? When you’re not able to suspend from a ceiling, you can use a special stand that just needs to be placed on a leveled surface. The chair hangs from a hook so you’re still able to swing and twirl. • Indoors or outdoors. Where is your ideal spot for a bubble chair? Is it your bedroom? The great room? Near the hot tub? Because the bubble chair is weather resistant, it can actually be used outside. In fact, it has a built-in channel that allows water to drain, so it’s perfectly safe to hang the chair near your pool or hot tub. • Purchase on-line or at a store. Hanging bubble chairs can be purchased at high-end furniture stores or from an on-line company. Because some chairs are better quality than others, and the price has a wide range, be sure you get the specks on the chair. • Installation. The bubble chair comes with a chain and hook. It can be screwed into an existing ceiling beam or anchored from cement or brick. It’s recommended to hire a professional to do the installation. • Rotating hook. If you’re planning on using your bubble chair in an area that has a great panoramic view, consider purchasing a rotating hook. It will allow you to fully rotate your chair. Your options are unlimited! Whether you choose to hang your ball chair outside or inside, have leather cushions or cloth ones, you’re sure to have a spectacular chair that will provide you with hours and hours of enjoyment.
