Le Corbusier

Le Corbusier believed furniture should be “extensions of our limbs and adapted to human functions.” Majorly known as an architect, Le Corbusier was highly influential across many fields as he used his skill in the fields of design, writing and urban planning. In 1922, Le Corbusier started working with his cousin Pierre Jeanneret, and they continuously sharing projects and ideas all their professional lives. In October 1927, a young architect named Charlotte Perriand was noticed by the two cousins, and a prolific collaboration lasted between the three designers until 1937. Once in a year, the leather should be treated with a special leather care product, but never with any type of strong cleaning agent. It’s advised that you only use quality leather products which do not leave any residue. Oily build-up on the leather makes it susceptible to bacteria, which can destroy the leather material. Clean the stitching with a soft brush. Make sure that your leather furniture is not positioned close to any heat sources, so that it does not dry out and become brittle or caked. In addition, we recommend that leather surfaces should not be permanently exposed to intense sunlight. Direct sunlight over an extended time period can diminish the quality of the leather. Leather can be treated occasionally with special conditioners to keep it in its original state. Liquid spills should be blotted out immediately, not wiped. For daily cleaning, dust leather with a soft cloth or feather duster.

Metal parts:

Do not use an abrasive or coarse material on the metal. Clean the chair with a mild detergent and water. Dilute in the mild detergent in water so it is not harsh on the metal. You can dip a soft toothbrush in the solution or a non-abrasive pad and use it to scrub off any residue or dirt on the chair. Dry any residual moisture with a soft, dry cloth or pad.

-Use a non-scratch cleaning pad, if there’s lots of grit on it from being outside. If just dusty, then use clean cloth to remove any dust infiltrate throughout your home or office space!
-Spray the aluminum leaves with any non-greasy household cleaner and use a dry cloth afterwards.
-A solution made up 1/2 cup vinegar into 10 cups water can help for discolored aluminum sheeting in an attempt restore its original color again.

How to restore an old artichoke lamp

Take out the leaf; you first have to take the leaf out of the lamp. To do this, you have to do is pull the wire. You can bend the ends open with pliers.
Remove the kinks; as you have the leaf out, you need to remove the kinks. You shouldn’t pull out the kinks with a hammer! If you hit with a hammer, the material would be damaged.
Rub out the kinks; you could press them out of the copper. Put a piece of strong paper between the hammer and leaf to avoid bruises. Then rub it over the leaf like you would do with an iron. If this works, you can clean the leaf and put it back. Never polish the copper side. The browned copper is a valuable patina that reveals the age of the lamp. If you would remove it, I think it would significantly reduce its value. A collector never would buy a lamp with high gloss!
Cut wire; cut the wire to the right size, but you have to first measure the width of the wire tunnel on the leaf. Take the length of the tunnel and add the double thickness of the rail (the large Artichoke has 3mm rails), plus 2x 5mm. These 5mm are to be bent the ends to 90 degrees, to fix the wire.
Reinstall and finish; you have to bend the wire by 5mm, 90 degrees on one side and push it at the lamp through the rail, then the tunnel and again through the rail. You can now bend the second end over to 90 degrees again.

• Wood breathes, so both extremely moist and dry air should be avoided. Humidifier or dehumidifier can be used when needed to help keep wood from drying out or warping. Avoid placing your wood furniture near air vents; the forced air will adversely affect the wood.

• Because of its appealing shape, the Butterfly Stool is sometimes used as a stand or to hold decorative items like bonsai trees or flower arrangements. Cover the bottoms of ornaments or vases with felt to prevent scratching.

• Protective plate should always be used under flower vases filled with water to keep moisture from drawing into the wood. Never let water stand on a wood surface.

• Hot objects should not be placed directly onto the wood of your furniture as this can discolor the finish and leave a permanent mark in the wood.

• For general cleaning:

o In order to maintain a clean surface and protect the finish from soil build up dust it several times a week. Use a clean, lint-free absorbent cloth for general dusting.

o Once a year wash your wood furniture surfaces with a sudsy solution of mild soap and water. After wringing out most of the water, use a clean, soft cloth to work on a small area at a time, overlapping areas as you work. Clean with the sudsy solution rinsing it with a soap-free dampened cloth. Dry immediately with a soft, lint-free cloth.

• For occasional polishing:

o With boiled linseed oil and gum turpentine mixed together in equal parts, apply it to the wood surfaces with a course, lint free cloth, such as cheesecloth. Rub it to the wood briskly until it is completely dry and sheen appears. Let the oil soak into the wood. Reapply if necessary.

o Apply once a month for three to four months for new furniture, then apply twice a year or as needed.

o Use a mixture of two parts of boiled linseed oil for older furniture and one part gum turpentine every six to eight months. Rub the mixture on the tops of tables, and to the underside of table leaves to prevent warping.

• For All Hard Finishes:

o Lacquers, varnishes, and polyurethane finishes can all be protected with waxes or polishes. Select the polish according to the level of gloss or sheen you desire. Do not mix products as a dull film may result. Clean the piece with cleaner-conditioner to remove an inappropriate wax or finish, and then apply the appropriate finish protection.

o A paste wax or an aerosol or liquid polish containing silicone will create a high gloss.

o With consecutive applications paste waxes offers the best protection and a lot of buffing provide a beautiful high gloss. Paste wax comes in shades of dark and light to blend in with the tone of the wood.

• Aerosol or liquid polishes that contain silicones offer a high gloss even with very little buffing; they also clean and shine and give the wood a durable protective finish. But this can complicate the process of refinishing in the future because silicones are rather difficult to remove. Finger smudges also tends to show more readily and need more frequent applications to maintain the gloss, causing a heavier silicone buildup.

• Satin-gloss and low-gloss finishes are best maintained by cream waxes or liquid cleaning polishes which do not contain silicones. Oil polishes can also be used as well, but require more rubbing and attract dust quickly.

Cleaning Your artichoke light

The Poul Henningsen designed feature light first made its appearance in 1958 and is still popular as a design classic. A futuristic design, coupled with a soft diffused light makes it perfect for all areas where it’s striking appearance and practical lighting is sought. Due to the number of blades in the design and the high resultant surface area of the fitting, it does tend to attract dust and needs to be cleaned once or twice a year, depending on the dust and conditions in your area of course.
• The design of the light makes the use of feather dusters and vacuum cleaners impractical. Fair warning – this is not a 2 minute job.

• When used as a ceiling-mounted fitting, access to the light is difficult. Rather than disconnecting the light, use a tall ladder and remove the leaves from their mountings. On most artichoke lights, this is not a difficult procedure as the leaves attach easily to the body and is uniform in size, so replacing them is not a jig-saw puzzle operation.

• If the leaves are of differing sizes or fixed to the body, you may have to clean the fixture in place. Follow all the safety procedure. Ensure that the power is off before handling the light and make sure your ladder or base is stable.

For brushed aluminum leaves.

• Use a non-scratch cleaning pad such as a Scotch-brite pad if there is a lot of grit on it from being outside. If just dusty, use a clean cloth to remove any dust.

• A solution of 1/2 cup of vinegar to 1 quart of water can help for a discolored aluminum. Use a clean cloth to rub this solution into the aluminum.

• Spray the aluminum with any non-greasy household cleaner and dry it with a dry cloth. This will make your brushed aluminum shine.

For glass leaves:

• Use a clean cloth to wipe any dust from the leaves. If the dirt is stubborn, wash with warm water and dish-washing soap. Rinsing with hot water to remove any trace of soap is the key here.

• Wipe down with a good quality window cleaner. Ensure that there are no water stains on the glass and polish with a dry cloth.

To prevent future dust build up, wipe the leaves down with fabric softener sheets before refitting them the base of the light. Apart from reducing static electricity on the leaves which will attract dust; it will give you the benefit of a fresh smell in the room. Wipe down as much of the frame with the fabric softener sheets before fitting the leaves.
